Manual Osteopath Therapy

What is Manual Osteopathic Therapy?

Manual Osteopathic Therapy (MOT) is a form of therapy that focuses on the assessment and treatment of imbalances in the structure and function of the body. This can be through the  musculoskeletal system, the nervous system, or the organ systems. MOT's will use their hands to make subtle and gentle adjustments to joints, organs, and other structures in order to bring the body back into alignment. When the structure is in alignment and able to move freely, there can be normal fluid flow, which allows for improved function and movement. By providing thorough assessment and treatment, MOT's can help promote the body's ability to heal itself.

During a treatment, the MOT will ask you to be wearing shorts and ladies will need to wear a sports bra. Your therapist will assess your entire body, paying attention to nerves, joints, fascia, the spine, and other structures in the body. The assessment is very gentle touch. A MOT treatment will consist of stretching, gentle pressure, and resistance movements. Your therapist will also advise you of any exercises that will help in your treatment plan.

What can Manual Osteopathic Therapy Treat?

MOT can treat a wide variety of conditions. Some of these conditions include:

  • arthritis
  • foot, ankle, hip, and knee pain
  • back pain, neck pain, and sciatica
  • hand, shoulder, and elbow pain
  • headaches
  • postural problems due to pregnancy, sports injury, driving or work strain, or digestive issues
  • neuralgia

MOT's can also detect conditions that are not treatable through manual osteopathy, to refer patients to other health care providers.
